In the exhibit\, their service is recounted against the backdrop of fear and racial tension that inspired thousands to volunteer from Hawaii and drove the U.S. government to remove Japanese Americans and people of Japanese ancestry on the West Coast to ten Wartime Relocation Authority (WRA) Incarceration Camps during the war. \nThrough 1\,500 square feet of immersive storytelling\, the exhibition showcases firsthand accounts\, rare artifacts\, and evocative images that reveal how the Nisei Soldiers’ service became a defining testament to courage\, sacrifice\, and belonging. Visitors will encounter the remarkable stories of the Nisei Soldiers who served in the European Theater as part of the 100th Infantry Battalion\, 442nd Regimental Combat Team—one of the most highly decorated units in military history—and in the Pacific Theater as linguists in the U.S. Army’s Military Intelligence Service \nLaunching this February 2026 at the MIS Historic Learning Center at the Presidio in San Francisco\, this national five-year tour will travel to 11 venues across the United States. SUMMARY:Queer Japantown Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””] \n\n\n\n\n\n\nDid you know that the Mattachine Society\, one of the earliest gay rights organizations\, had their first of many annual conventions right in Japantown? Or\, that Chinatown was once known as being a nightlife entertainment capitol that had drag performers in 1942? The history of LGBTQ+ people is all around us. It is not isolated to a single neighborhood\, a specific building\, or a special district. It is everywhere where people who identify within the spectrum exist\, you just have to know where to look. \nQueer Japantown highlights some of the lesser-known items in history that happened in places you might not think. Specifically\, these materials focus on things that happened in or have a connection to Japantown\, and Asian American drag. This exhibit follows a few events like the Cherry Blossom Festival parade and the Compton’s Cafeteria Riot\, organizations like the GLBTQ+ Asian Pacific Alliance (GAPA) and Older Asian Sisters in Solidarity (OASIS)\, and people like Li-Kar of Finocchio’s and George Choy. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n[/vc_column_text][vc_separator css=””][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””] \nJoin us the opening reception of Queer Japantown on Saturday\, June 13\, 2026\, 2 PM- 4 PM.\nRegister at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/queer-japantown-exhibit-opening-reception-tickets-1990039584969?aff=oddtdtcreator[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”10069″ img_size=”large” css=””][vc_separator][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] \nMeet the Curator\nKristi Yummykochi is a San Francisco Politi-Kween for the people\, and member of the first A&PI drag collective in the US\, the Rice Rockettes. She has been featured in publications from Vice News\, NBC Asian American\, and NewNowNext. In her spare time\, she enjoys eating the rich and encouraging critical social dialog using her whip.[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”10078″ img_size=”large” css=””][/vc_column][/vc_row]
