Located at the historic site of the first US Army language school which secretly trained Japanese American soldiers in Japanese military intelligence at the start of World War II\, the Military Intelligence Service Historic Learning Center\, Building 640 in the Presidio of San Francisco honors and commemorates the legacy of the Japanese American Soldiers who served as military intelligence linguists during WWII in the Pacific. The National Japanese American Historical Society together with The Presidio Trust\, and the Golden Gate National Recreation Area ensure that the courage\, sacrifice\, and patriotism of these veterans are remembered by future generations.\nThe history of these linguists is rooted in secrecy. The Army Language School\, founded on November 1\, 1941\, one month prior to the attack on Pearl Harbor. Some fifty-eight second-generation Japanese Americans\, or Nisei\, along with two Caucasian soldiers\, were trained as military interpreters in an abandoned airplane hangar on Crissy Field. Despite austere conditions\, the program produced about 6\,000 graduates. The Nisei’s specialized knowledge of Japanese culture and language gave American forces a tactical and strategic advantage\, and their work helped lay the foundation for a democratic Japan after the war.\nIronically\, in 1942\, the Nisei soldiers and the school was moved to Camp Savage\, Minnesota\, and later to Fort Snelling\, MN while their families among the 120\,000 Japanese American were excluded from their homes on the West Coast and eventually incarcerated in American concentration camps.\n\nIn 2000\, the MIS was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation for their meritorious service\, In 2012\, the veterans of the MIS along with the famed100th Battalion and 442nd Regimental Combat Team were honored with a Congressional Gold Medal.\n\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][/vc_column][/vc_row]

DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]The Japantown Art and Media (JAM) Workshop 50th Anniversary event taking place on October 11th from 1:00-5:00pm at Studio Gen and the National Japanese American Historical Society’s Peace Gallery in San Francisco Japantown. The event will open with a taiko performance at Studio Gen\, and will flow to the Peace Gallery across the street for the program beginning at 2:00pm. Two exhibits featuring JAM artists will be on view at both locations beginning October 11th through February 2026. \nFull details bellow:\n50th Anniversary for JAM slated for October 11th at NJAHS\nOn Saturday\, October 11\, 2025 at 2PM in San Francisco Japantown\, a\nmulti-generational task force of artists and community activists will honor the 50th\nAnniversary of Japantown Art and Media (JAM) Workshop – featuring music\, spoken\nword and the most comprehensive display of JAM’s significant work to date. This event\nand accompanying exhibits will tell the visual stories of Asian American history during\nthe final turbulent quarter of the 20th Century.\nWes Senzaki\, Gail Aratani and Richard Tokeshi jumped at the chance to provide their\nartistic skills in the name of social and political causes\, not just in Nihonmachi but in the\nexpanse of communities across the Bay Area. They were the first of dozens of artists\nwho contributed by way of the JAM Workshop during a 25-year period. In 1975\, these\nthree artists were among the dozen pioneers dedicating their time and skills in the initial\nyear of the JAM Workshop. It represented Nihonmachi’s first art movement in modern\ntimes.\n“Although JAM existed for 25 years\, its impact on the Asian American movement was\nsignificant\,” said Leon Sun\, another of the early JAM artists. “Our work visualized some\nof the most important historic events of that era. Even today\, we still recognize JAM’s\ncontributions because the art has been saved in the archives\, reminding us that our\npast lessons show us the road forward.”\nThe celebration will take place at the National Japanese American History Society\n(NJAHS) at 1684 Post Street in San Francisco from 2pm to 5pm. The opening\nperformance for the celebration will take place at Studio Gen at 1:15pm\, located across\nthe street from NJAHS on the second floor of Japan Center East Mall. The public is\ninvited to RSVP and discover JAM’s timeless work. Additionally\, a new generation of\nartists and community supporters will offer details on the future of community art\nthrough a pathbreaking concept called the JAM Salon.\nIn conjunction with the anniversary will be an exhibit featuring the works of JAM’s\nwomen artists at Studio Gen\, which will be on view from October 11th\, 2025 through\nFebruary 28\, 2026. In 2015\, thanks to the efforts of community organizations\, leaders\, and activists\, like the Earle K. & Katherine F. (Muto) Moore Foundation\, the Japanese American History: Not For Sale Facebook page\, the Heart Mountain Wyoming Foundation\, and actor George Takei\, JANM was entrusted with the safekeeping of the Eaton Collection\, an important collection of some 400 items made by Japanese American incarcerees. \nPeople around the United States have since helped JANM fill in the gaps in the historical record by identifying makers and telling the stories of artifacts from the collection as it toured the country. SUMMARY:Topaz Collages - The Art of Jeanie Kashima - Artist Presentation
DESCRIPTION:Eugenia “Jeanie” Kashima was the first baby born in Topaz (Central Utah) Concentration Camp\, on September 22\, 1942. Seventy-eight years later during the initial stages of the COVID epidemic Jeanie would revisit her birth via art. This journey would produce the collages here. \nHer family lived in Berkeley before the war where her grandfather Seizo Oishi owned a wholesale carnation nursery in Richmond\, CA\, and her father was a landscape architect. Persuant to E.O. 9066 her mother\, father\, and older brother were forced from their home and sent to Tanforan “Assembly Center” before being transfered to “Central Utah War Relocation Center\,” later known as Topaz. \nThe idea of these collages began with the discovery of family photographs\, during the COVID quarantine. Each photo by Edna Horiuchi/Discover Nikkei photo was only about two by three inches. \nThe family was photographed by her uncles\, both of whom had volunteered to serve in the US Army 442nd Regimential Combat Team. Cameras were not normally allowed in camp but her uncles snapped pictures of the family while on leave. \nIn 2020\, Jeanie enlarged these photo images and added them to her mixed media to create the collages. Her mix of the historic images blended with her artistic interpretation add to the richness and depth of life in Topaz\, and her return to Topaz in 2022. \nThese collages have been shown at at the Visions Museum of Textile Art in San Diego. \nOn Saturday\, March 15\, 2PM NJAHS hosts Jeanie Kashima’s “Artist Meet & Greet program and discussion. Kashima’s art is currently on display at the NJAHS Peace gallery in Japantown\, 12 Noon- 5PM & first Sats of each month. EVENT IS FREE. Please RSVP (light refreshments provided) HERE \n

DESCRIPTION:Read the Zine here!\nhttps://toourancestors.com/ \nThe late Janice Mirikitani shared that we must\, “write towards the light.” In this spirit of Janice’s message and calling in care\, a cohort of Japanese diasporic artists will convene to co-create a love letter to our ancestors inspired by the Japanese poetic form of renshi. \nRenshi is a collaborative “linked” poetry form used to inspire bridging and healing. When practicing renshi poetry\, each poet creates a poem\, then takes the last line of their poem and passes it onto the next person in the “chain” to use as the first line of their work—and so on. The works that emerge reflect dynamism of individual exploration\, collective inspiration\, and deeply relational authorship. \nTo Our Ancestors is a project that convenes six artists to create a digital “renshi love letter” to our ancestors that bridges across mediums and artist perspectives by alternating between poets and visual artists. \nEach artist had 2-4 weeks to create their piece before passing whatever they interpret as the concluding element of their piece to the next artist to serve as the starting point of inspiration for their contribution. \nLauren Ito received an SFAC Emerging Artist Grant to fund this project in partnership with fiscal sponsor\, National Japanese American Historical Society (NJAHS). \nRead the Zine here! \nhttps://toourancestors.com/ \n

Davina is Diné and originally from Birdsprings\, Arizona\, a community adjacent to Leupp. Kojun “Jun” Ueno Sunseri is shin-issei\, born in Tokyo with biological paternal roots from Ueno and emigrated at five years old to the United States to be raised in other cultures in Southern California and eventually adopted. Koji Lau-Ozawa is a sansei/yonsei from San Francisco. In the 1930s\, Reverend Yoshio Iwanaga introduced Bon odori to Buddhist communities up and down the American West Coast. Since that time\, Bon odori has remained an important Japanese American tradition\, through the devastation of World War II concentration camps\, the difficult postwar years\, and into the 21st century. \nAs the Buddhist Churches of America marks its 125th anniversary\, “American Bon Odori: Dancing in Joy and Remembrance\,” celebrates the legacy of Rev. Yoshio Iwanaga\, Obon dance teachers past and present\, and all who have entered the dance circle. \nDrawing upon archival photos\, rare films\, and artifacts\, “American Bon Odori” chronicles the history and significance of Obon dancing (“Bon odori”) in the continental United States\, from the 1930s and the mass incarceration of Japanese Americans during World War II\, through the postwar era and into the 21st century. Principal curator\, Dr. Wynn Kiyama\, has written extensively on Bon odori for Discover Nikkei\, Wheel of Dharma\, and Portland State University’s Digital Archive. Assistant curator\, Jane Suiei Naito\, is a member of the BCA Archive Committee and a Sogetsu Ikebana instructor. \nThe exhibit will also feature 3 special workshops on July 6\, August 3\, and September 7 in the Peace Gallery. A digital photo kiosk that includes your veteran’s photo will be unveiled at the 10 year anniversary event on Sunday\, November 12\, and we welcome your attendance. This digital kiosk will be located on the MIS Historic Learning Center’s existing MIS Honor Wall\, which lists the names of some 13\,000 MIS and affiliates who served in various capacities from 1941-1952 The task of collecting the photos of these MIS and MIS-related veterans and their affiliates (civilian instructors\, support staff\, Naval Intelligence\, Counter Intelligence Corp (CIC)\, WACS\, Korean War MIS) is expected to take some time because of the wartime shroud of secrecy and the fact that many have passed away since the end of the war.  \nThe task of collecting thousands of veteran photos is daunting\, and that’s why NJAHS seeks your help. McNaughton\, author of Nisei Linguists: Japanese Americans in the Military Intelligence Service During World War II\nAn optional sit-down lunch in the Presidio Officers’ Club’s beautiful Ortega Ballroom\nTours\, presentations and the public unveiling of a brand new photo kiosk honoring the Nisei Veterans of the Military Intelligence Service at the MIS Historic Learning Center\, Bldg. 640\, on Crissy Field \n\nThe deadline for registration for the 10 Year Anniversary Event is October 31. \nUPDATE: ALL EVENTS ARE SOLD OUT EXCEPT FOR JAMES MCNAUGHTON SECOND LECTURE AND MISHLC OPEN HOUSE. \nRegistration for James McNaughton Second Lecture and MISHLC Open House \nThe Military Intelligence Service Historic Learning Center (MIS Historic Learning Center) is a 13\,000 square foot educational center devoted to the history of Japanese Americans and dedicated to the MIS Japanese American veterans. It is situated along the Presidio of San Francisco’s Crissy Field at the site of the original MIS language school\, and is within walking distance of the newly created Presidio Tunnel Tops. DESCRIPTION:The Go For Broke Spirit by Shane Sato\nNovember 11th\, 2023 – March 31st\, 2024\nOn display at the Military Intelligence Service Historic Learning Center\n640 Mason Street\, Presidio of San Francisco\, CA 94129\n  \nOpen from November 11th\, 2033 – March 31st\, 2024\, Weekends from Noon to 5PM \nLocated in the Military Intelligence Service Historic Learning\nCenter | Building 640\, 640 Mason Street\, San Francisco\, CA 94129 \n$10 General Admission | Free for veterans and children under 12 \nFREE Admission during opening weekend. \nAdditionally\, the book series\, including “The Go For Broke Spirit: Portraits of\nCourage” and “The Go For Broke Spirit: Portraits of Legacy”\, will be\navailable for purchase in person on opening day. \n  \nAbout the Exhibit \nNJAHS is excited to announce the newest exhibit at the Military Intelligence Service Historic Learning Center: The Go For Broke Spirit\, an over twenty year long photography project by Shane Sato that explores both his Japanese American identity\, and the “untold” histories of the Nisei and Japanese American veterans of World War II. \nThe series of portraits features Nisei and Japanese American veterans\, dressed in military uniforms similar to the ones they once donned during the war. The juxtaposition between their age and their vintage dress offers viewers a chance to “see into the past” and “equate these men\, in the twilight of their lives\, to the vets who fought in WWII” (Sato\, The Go For Broke Spirit). Each portrait captures the feelings of these men\, and what it might have been like fighting for a country that imprisoned their family and friends\, the racism they endured for looking like the enemy\, and their ultimate triumph. \nSato aims to inspire the audience through the triumphs of the Nisei\, and also show the complex range of emotions these men must have felt fighting for this country . . . a country that did not fight for them. \nThe Go For Broke Spirit now also includes Japanese Americans who fought after WWII\, in the Korean\, Vietnam\, and Gulf Wars. Simultaneously\, it provides awareness to the Japanese American War Memorial Court in Little Tokyo\, CA.\, and the MIS Historic Learning Center in the Presidio of San Francisco. Through his portrait series and gallery exhibitions\, Sato hopes that everyone will remember the diversity of the American soldiers who served this country\, as well as those Japanese Americans who gave their lives for this country’s freedom. \n  \nAbout the Artist \nShane Sato is a Los Angeles based photographer who has been photographing for the past 30 years. His works range from more somber and historical themes such as The Go For Broke series\, to creative and experimental fashion shoots.
