SUMMARY:ARTISTS' EYES: ART OF INCARCERATION
DESCRIPTION:In commemoration of the 75th Anniversary of Executive Order 9066\, the National Japanese American Historical Society presents Artists’ Eyes\, Art of Incarceration. During World War II\, Executive Order 9066 led to the registration\, exclusion\, forced removal and mass incarceration of 120\,000 Japanese Americans from the West Coast. Two multigenerational art exhibits reveal a successive unearthing of evocative expressions through three generations. Works by Japanese American and other multicultural artists expose the profound and eventual reclamation of history and identity. Works and artist talks make connections to the current climate today. \nThe exhibits\, hosted at NJAHS’s two sites at the Presidio and Japantown\, are curated by\nBetty Nobue Kano and Judy Shintani.\nFront images:  Artwork L to R: Hideo Kobashigawa\, Ellen Bepp\, Roger Shimomura\, Shari Arai DeBoer. \nLocation: MIS Historic Learning Center and NJAHS Peace Gallery \nWhere: MIS Historic Learning Center\, Building 640\n640 Old Mason Street\nCrissy Field\, Presidio of San Francisco\nSan Francisco\, CA 94129\nExhibition Dates: 11-11-2017 to 5-20-2018\nOpen weekends\, 12-5pm; W-F by appt. $10 Admission\,\nFREE to members\, veterans\, children 12 & under \nWhere: NJAHS Peace Gallery\n1684 Post Street\nSan Francisco\, CA 94115\nExhibition Dates: 12-2-2017 to 4-22-2018\nOpen M-F\, 12-5pm; 1st Sat of the month\, 12-5pm\nFREE Admission \n

SUMMARY:Preserve & Protect Our Freedoms- NJAHS Annual Awards Event
DESCRIPTION: As we commemorate the 75th anniversary of Executive Order 9066\, this year\, we are reminded of the many struggles faced by Japanese Americans but also others less fortunate and marginalized in today’s society. \nJoin us to honor Keynote speaker Dr. Cruz Reynoso\, civil rights attorney and the first Latino California Supreme Court justice and Presidential Medal of Freedom awardee for his unwavering passion for social justice: his advocacy on behalf of farmworkers\, his call for human dignity of the rural poor\, and civil rights for the most vulnerable\, marginalized communities. This year also marks the foundation planning for the newest entry into the National Park Service system\, the Honouliuli National Monument site and the opening of the Honouliuli Education Center (at JCCH).  And in doing so\, we recognize the advocacy and achievement of the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii and Carole Hayashino\, its executive director\, who raised awareness and pressed for the recognition of his historic site -an US Army facility in Hawaii that unjustly incarcerated thousands of Japanese Americans in the aftermath of Pearl Harbor.\nAnd we pay tribute to Art Shibayama and Grace Shimizu of Campaign for Justice\, for their quest for redress and education for Japanese Latin Americans of WWII. \nA FREE public program  4PM – 5PM  will be held outside of Building 640 to shed light on the civil liberty lessons of WWII and to highlight the new challenges we face to preserve and protect our freedoms today. \n================================================= \nA paid SPECIAL EVENT –Reservations Only- Sit Down Dinner will follow inside Building 640. 5:15PM – 7:30PM with specially-catered tastings from\nLa Mar Cebicheria Peruana and a sit down dinner from Venga Paella. Proceeds benefit the National Japanese American Historical Society. \nFOR INFORMATION\, PROGRAM RSVP: 415-921-5007. \nFOR DINNER SPONSOR RESERVATIONS\, contact NJAHS at njahs@njahs.org | 415-921-5007\nor go to  EVENTBRITE DINNER SPONSOR \nDOWNLOAD INVITATION\nSPONSOR FORM\n

SUMMARY:DAY OF REMEMBRANCE Feb 19 2017
DESCRIPTION:FRAGILE FREEDOMS\n75th Anniversary of Executive Order 9066\nSunday\, February 19\, 2017\nProgram: 2 -4PM\nFollowed by a Candlelighting procession to the JCCCNC \nAMC Kabuki 8 Theatres\n1881 Post Street\nSan Francisco\, Japantown\nOn February 19\, 1942\, President Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066\, setting into motion the wartime mass incarceration of 120\,000 Japanese Americans from the west coast. Two-thirds of them\, American citizens by birth\, and most of them long-term residents of the US. After the bombing of Pearl Harbor and under the guise of military necessity\, these civilians were rounded up and forcibly removed from their homes without due process and incarcerated in concentration camps for the duration of the war. There were no cases of espionage or sabotage committed by Japanese Americans on the continental US. It was found that there was no military necessity for their treatment\, instead\, there was falsification of evidence\, suppression of such evidence and fraud upon the Supreme Court. On the 75th Anniversary of the Order\, the Bay Area Day of Remembrance Consortium commemorates the fragility of the Bill of Rights and the US Constitution and unites with our most marginalized communities in these current times. Speaker Don Tamaki\, coram nobis legal team\, EO 9066 performance by Lenora Lee.  Funded in part by a grant from the San Francisco Japantown Foundation\, San Francisco Grants for the Arts. \nSuggested Donation: $10. \nClick here for Eventbrite: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/bay-area-day-or-remembrance-presents-tickets-31369380662 \n \n

Saturday\, November 12\, 2016 \nClick HERE for the event flyer\nWhere It All Began\, November 1941. \nHere on November 1\, 1941\, in the shadow of the Golden Gate Bridge\, the U.S. Army secretly trained and housed the first class of the Fourth Army Intelligence School—the MIS—forerunner of the renowned Defense Language Institute and Foreign Language Center at the Presidio of Monterey. \nAttached to every combat unit in the Pacific Theater\, Nisei soldier linguists translated documents\, intercepted communications\, impersonated the enemy\, and gathered key intelligence from prisoners of war. Their intimate knowledge of Japanese language and culture helped gain a tactical advantage over their opponents. The soldiers of the MIS are credited with shortening the war by two years and helped lay the groundwork for Japan’s democracy during the Allied Occupation. SUMMARY:43rd Annual Nihonmachi Street Fair
DESCRIPTION:Founded in 1973\, the Nihonmachi Street Fair was hatched as an idea to provide leadership and mentorship opportunities for the youth of J-Town and to honor the cultural heritage that was\, at the time\, at risk of being displaced. Since then the annual event has grown from a four-booth affair to a two-day event. The Nihonmachi Street Fair considers itself the original “melting pot” of street fairs\, with many aspects of Asian-Pacific American life—and San Francisco’s cultural life—expressed through performance\, tradition\, art\, music\, food\, and community outreach and service. \nThe Nihonmachi Street Fair proudly evolves to reflect the city it celebrates while staying true to its original mission:\nEngage and develop young Asian American leaders through the development of building community that celebrates our culture and diversity. \n

SUMMARY:Middle and High School Teachers Summer Institute
DESCRIPTION:COURSE IS NOW CLOSED \nOur 2 day institute will introduce and/or reacquaint you with place based and inquiry based learning that meets Common Core and C3 Framework for Social Studies Standards. Our goal is to provide you with practical and useful ideas for implementing Social Studies education through learning activities and student generated research. This institute is framed by the compelling question\, “In want ways did place determine the fate of Japanese Americans after the bombing of Pearl Harbor?” to provoke students to pose meaningful questions\, apply critical thinking and build their own historical interpretations. \nUsing a regional perspective\, we dispel the current narrative of a single experience for Japanese Americans as we draw deeper conclusions and understanding of how and why this injustice took place. Case studies will compare pre and post war communities in Hawaii\, Seattle\, and California. This institute includes a visit to the Bainbridge Island Exclusion Memorial\, Wing Luke Museum\, and a walking tour of the International District. \n$250 professional development stipend upon completion of all seminar requirements.
