120 Years of San Francisco’s Japantown

Discover the Stories. Experience the Culture. Celebrate the Community.

Step into Japantown. Discover a story 120 years in the making.

At the heart of San Francisco lies a neighborhood unlike any other—a place where Japanese heritage, cherished memories, and the spirit of community come together.

For 120 years, Japantown has been a place to call home, a place to gather, and a place to keep traditions alive. From its early beginnings as Nihonjinmachi to the vibrant community we know today as “J-Town,” its story is one of courage, resilience, and the enduring power of belonging.

Through earthquakes, discrimination, and generations of change, the people of Japantown have continued to shape a community rich in culture, history, and heart. Every street, every gathering place, and every shared memory holds a piece of this remarkable journey.

But Japantown is more than its past. It is a living, breathing community.

It is where generations connect, traditions evolve, and Japanese American culture continues to inspire. It is a place to explore, to learn, to celebrate, and to discover stories that connect us all.

We invite you to experience 120 years of Japantown through the people, places, and moments that have made it what it is today. Whether you have called J-Town home for generations or are discovering it for the very first time, there is a story here waiting for you.

Come discover the past. Experience the present. Be part of Japantown’s future.

120 years strong—and the story continues.
